JAMES BALDWIN SCHOLARS PROGRAM ENDOWMENT FUND

Named after preeminent African-American writer and scholar James Baldwin, who taught at Hampshire College, the James Baldwin Scholars Program was founded in 1992 as part of an urban outreach initiative by the college. The Baldwin Scholars Program provides talented students of color from underserved communities an opportunity to develop and improve the skills necessary for college success through coursework and tutorial support at Hampshire.

Baldwin Scholars receive a scholarship that fully meets program costs for one year including: tuition, room and board, and other expenses. During the academic year, Scholars live on campus and enroll in a reduced course schedule of regular Hampshire courses including a first year tutorial and writing course. Particular attention is given to developing the written and analytic skills essential to carrying out rigorous coursework, independent study, and research at Hampshire.

Increased funding for the James Baldwin Scholars Program would ensure that Hampshire continues to offer full financial support to Baldwin Scholars for years to come. It would also allow the program to expand to include more students and expand recruiting in urban areas.

Other funding opportunities include: enhancing the academic support and opportunities provided to students by adding additional writing support, increasing funding for internships and study abroad, and offering community-building events like field trips and special co-curricular activities.

Thank you for helping to endow Hampshire’s Future.

In Their Own Words

Hampshire encourages my son to keep walking to his own drummer and to do whatever it is he wants to, but to do it well. At Hampshire, you have 1,300 students who march to their own drummer
