BARGAIN SALE GIFTS

A donor making a "bargain sale" gift sells property (typically, real estate) to Hampshire for less than the fair market value. For example, a donor might sell the college land valued at $200,000 for $100,000. The donor would be allowed a federal charitable deduction of $100,000, or the difference between the value ($200,000) and the selling price ($100,000). The donor's capital gains tax liability on the sale would be reduced in the same proportion.

Those interested in learning more about how these giving methods can be useful as philanthropic vehicles should speak with their legal/tax advisors and with a member of the Institutional Advancement staff at Hampshire by calling 413-559-5574.
