ENDOWED FUNDS 

The funds listed below are all endowed funds, meaning that gifts are made to the principal and the interest is disbursed each year for the purpose noted. As the principal grows, so does the available interest. By virtue of being endowed, these funds are established for perpetuity.

  • Ahmed Lecture Fund Established in honor of retired faculty member Eqbal Ahmad, supports the annual Eqbal Ahmed lecture
  • Archives Endowment Fund Supports the maintenance of the college's archives and special collections
  • Carle Illustrated Literature Endowment Supports programs in children’s art, literature, and theater
  • Center for the Book Endowment Supports rare book acquisition and programmatic activities for the Center for the Book
  • Civil Liberties and Public Policy Endowment Fund Supports the national reproductive rights activist and leadership work of the Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program
  • Dana Meadows Sustainability Award Endowment Supports student research in agricultural sustainability, and particularly projects directly related to the Hampshire Community Supported Agriculture program
  • David Smith Endowment Fund Established in honor of retired faculty member David Smith, supports student projects in American Studies, and will ultimately help fund the David Smith Professorship in American Studies
  • Denice O’Neill Scholarship Fund Established in memory of Denice O’Neill 85F, who was killed in the 1988 bombing of PanAm flight 103, funds the work of two Division III students annually – a woman student in the sciences who receives financial aid, and a student working in medicine, health, anthropology, or child studies; and helps fund a Fall speaker’s colloquium with an alum working in the sciences
  • Earl Ubell Student Journalism Project Endowment Fund Established by Michael Ubell 70F in honor of his father, supports student work in the field of journalism
  • Ellen Bradlow Fund Established in memory of Ellen Bradlow 70F, supports programs and lectures on topics that were of special interest to Ellen, including youth or young adult suicide, depression, learning disabilities, and other psychological development issues affecting college students; as well as prenatal influences on sexual development and behavior, pesticides as environmental estrogens, animal behavior, anthropology, and endocrinology
  • Farm Center Endowment Fund Supports the operations of the Hampshire Farm Center
  • Gloria Germain Fund for Early Childhood Studies Established by Steven Germain 71F in honor of his mother, supports programming and faculty development in the area of early childhood education
  • Gregory S. Prince, Jr. Community Partnerships for Social Change Endowment Fund Established in honor of former president Gregory Prince, support grants to students, faculty, and staff working in collaboration with community-based organizations to address local needs
  • Gregory and Toni Prince Scholarship Fund Established in honor of former president Gregory Prince and his wife Toni, provides support to Division II and III students for their academic projects
  • Henry Steele Commanger Endowment Fund Supports the purchase of books and other information resources in the field of American studies
  • Iris Barr Endowment Fund for Mentoring Supports students engaged in off-campus field study
  • James Baldwin Scholars Endowment Established in honor of former Five College faculty member James Baldwin, supports the James Baldwin Scholars Program, which provides a transitional year for economically disadvantaged students of color who show promise and ambition but who are not yet academically prepared to enter college
  • Justine Salton Memorial Fund Established in memory of Justine Salton 90F, supports research by female students in the sciences
  • Kathy Kyker-Snowman Fund Established in honor of former staff member Kathy Kyker-Snowman, supports student participation in outdoor programs
  • Larry Beede Southwest Studies Scholarship Fund Established in honor of retired staff member Larry Beede, supports students conducting projects, research, or field study in the U.S. Southwest and Mexico
  • Lemelson Center Endowment Supports the operations of the Lemelson Assistive Technology Design Center
  • Lester Mazor Endowment in Law and Society Established in honor of retired faculty member Lester Mazor, supports the interdisciplinary study of law, culture, politics and social science, and the use of this knowledge to promote cross cultural understanding and a more just society for all people
  • Liebling Center Fund Established in honor of retired faculty member Jerome Liebling, supports ongoing maintenance of the Liebling Center for Film, Photography, and Video
  • Littauer Book Fund Supports the purchase of books and other information resources in the area of Jewish studies
  • Lorna and Ray Coppinger Endowment Established in honor of retired faculty member Ray Coppinger and his wife Lorna, both pioneers in the field of animal behavior, supports student research in animal behavior, cognitive science, and related fields
  • Louis and Enid Susan Hexter Fund Established by Hampshire President Ralph Hexter in honor of his parents, supports student financial aid
  • Martha Sharp Joukowsky Faculty Development Fund Established by Artemis Joukowsky 81F and his family in honor of his grandmother, supports summer faculty research and travel
  • Morris Sustainability Endowment Fund Established in honor of Sam Morris 97F, supports student research in the area of environmental and agricultural sustainability
  • Music Endowment Fund Supports Hampshire’s music program
  • Nansi and Leonard Glick Library Endowment Fund Established by retired faculty member Len Glick and his wife Nansi, supports the purchase of books and other information resources in the area of social justice for women
  • Nora Stein Endowed Writing Fund Established in memory of Nora Stein 70F, supports students engaged in writing projects, particularly at the Division III level
  • Outdoor Program Scholarship Endowment Supports the participation by students of limited financial means in OPRA January Term courses
  • Penina M. Glazer Book Fund Established by retired faculty member Penina Glazer, supports the purchase of books and other information resources in the field of history
  • Peter Ewald Scholarship Fund Established in memory of Peter Ewald 82F, supports student financial aid
  • Sander R. Thoenes Memorial Fund Established in memory of Sander Thoenes 87F, who was killed in 1999 while covering political upheaval in East Timor for the Financial Times, supports students pursuing Division III projects in the areas of journalism, international relations, and peace studies
  • Sandol Milliken Stoddard Summer Writing Scholarship Established by Gerry Warburg 74S in honor of his mother, supports summer stipends for young writers of great promise
  • Southwest Studies Endowment Fund Supports the Southwest Studies program, including programmatic initiatives and student projects
  • Tara Nelson Award Established in memory of Tara Nelson 80F, supports students working on Division II and III projects dealing with alternative medicine, public health, and the integration of non-Western medicine with the U.S. healthcare system
  • Tim Harkness Fund for Invention Established in memory of Tim Harkness 70F, provides grants for Five College students pursuing interests in invention and sustainability
  • Tom Joslin Memorial Endowment Fund Established in memory of faculty member Tom Joslin, supports student internships in the entertainment industry
  • Visiting Alum Endowment Fund Supports the costs associated with bringing a distinguished alum to campus each year to present her or his work
  • Woody Klein Memorial Fund Established in memory of Woody Klein 72F, provides encouragement and recognition to students who demonstrate special talent and potential in journalism and communications
  • Writer in Residence Endowment Fund Supports the writer-in-residence program
