BEQUESTS

Leave your mark on the world - by including Hampshire College in your will.

One method of giving to Hampshire that is often overlooked by prospective donors is the bequest. There are a number of ways to make gifts by will. The most common are:

  • General Bequest: The donor's will directs a sum of money or a percentage of the estate to the college.
  • Specific Bequest: The donor's will directs a specified item of property to the college.
  • Residual Bequest: The donor's will directs to the college all or a portion of the estate after other distributions have been made.
  • Contingent Bequest: The donor's will directs a portion of the estate to the college if for some reason the primary intentions cannot be satisfied.

Making a bequest by will reduces the taxable estate by the amount distributed to Hampshire. Unlike many other forms of charitable giving, making a gift by will is revocable during the donor's lifetime. The donor may change the will as circumstances change. The will allows donors to realize their giving goals, while providing the comfort of an "intent" rather than an "obligation."

We encourage donors interested in making charitable gifts by will to review proposed language with the director of planned gifts at Hampshire to ensure that charitable intent can be fulfilled.

Those interested in learning more about the Gift Annuity are advised to speak with their legal/tax advisors and with Institutional Advancement.
