GIFTS WITH AN INCOME INTEREST

Charitable Lead Trust

Described as "a gift you get back," a Charitable Lead Trust allows a donor to give the income from assets placed in trust to Hampshire for a term of years, while retaining the principal for the donor or heirs on the termination of the trust. The donor is allowed a federal income tax deduction when the assets held by the trust are returned upon termination of the trust. When the assets in trust pass on to heirs, the donor is allowed a gift or estate tax deduction. In both cases, the deduction is equal to the present value of the income stream given to the college. The Charitable Lead Trust is often used to maximize charitable deductions in a high-income year or to pass on assets to heirs in a tax-advantaged way.

Those interested in learning more about the Gift Annuity are advised to speak with their legal/tax advisors and with Institutional Advancement.
